TERRISS AT PITTCON
We were fortunate to be able to attend the conference as a guest, with a team member from Terriss at PittCon getting to walk the conference. While there, we saw a handful of familar names. Notably, we came across one of the company’s we represent – Xylem Lab Solutions.
Not only were they showcasing their products at a booth, but we got to attend one of their demonstrations as well. Said demonstration was about their refractometers, specifically.
Their demonstration, called Exploring Sweet Secrets with Xylem Lab Solutions Refractometers was hosted by their product manager, Michelle Kuzio. At this demonstration, they provided tips and tricks on how to make a 15% Brix solution. Throughout, Ms. Kuzio talked to us about the science behind the refractometer.
WHAT IS A REFRACTOMER?
A refractometer is an instrument used to measure the concentration of dissolved solids in a solution. It does this by using refraction, and basing the measurements on a scale called the refractive index.
COMPETITION
Those attending the demonstration were able to see the refractometer in action using a little competition. In this competition, volunteers were challenged to create a 15% Brix solution by blind pouring a syrup solution into some water. Afterwards, the volunteer would put the sample into the refractometer, and the refractometer would read how high of a percentage they had and if it was close to 15%.
Needless to say, our very own Terriss team member got the closest to 15 at 17%, thus winning first place in the demonstration.
WRAPPING UP
Overall, Terriss had a great time at PittCon. It was an interesting experience, and we were glad we got to see some familiar names. Hopefully, we’ll be able to attend more conferences to learn more and meet some new faces!
